Zen Writer

Terms of Use

Effective 24 July 2026

These Terms govern your use of Zen Writer, an offline-first screenplay writing application. By downloading or using the app, you agree to these Terms.

1. Who may use Zen Writer

You must be at least 13 years old to use Zen Writer. If you are under the age of legal majority where you live, a parent or guardian must review and agree to these Terms for you.

2. Your license to use the app

Zen Writer gives you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and revocable license to install and use the app on devices you own or control, subject to these Terms and the rules of the app store through which you obtained it. The app is licensed, not sold. Rights not expressly granted remain reserved.

3. Your writing belongs to you

You retain ownership of the screenplays, notes, characters, and other content you create or import. Zen Writer does not claim ownership of your work. You are responsible for making sure your content and your use of it comply with applicable law and do not infringe another person's rights.

4. Local files, exports, and backups

Zen Writer stores projects locally on your device and lets you choose when and where to import, export, or share files. You are responsible for maintaining backups and checking exported files before relying on them. Clearing app storage, uninstalling the app, device failure, or loss of a device may permanently remove local work that you have not backed up.

5. Free and paid features

Features available without payment may differ by platform, version, or release. Where Zen Writer offers paid features, the price, billing period, trial details, and included benefits shown at checkout form part of these Terms. A one-time or "lifetime" purchase means non-expiring access to the identified features for as long as Zen Writer continues to make those features available on the applicable platform; it is not a promise that the app or platform will operate forever.

6. Subscriptions, cancellations, and refunds

If a subscription is offered, it renews automatically for the period and price shown at checkout unless you cancel it through your app-store account before renewal. Uninstalling Zen Writer does not cancel a subscription. The app store processes billing, cancellations, and refunds under its rules and applicable law. Zen Writer does not directly receive your full payment-card details.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the app for unlawful, fraudulent, or abusive activity;
  • copy, resell, sublicense, or distribute the app except where applicable law or an open-source license permits it;
  • reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code except where applicable law expressly allows it; or
  • interfere with the app, its security, app-store services, or another person's use of those services.

8. Third-party services

App stores, device operating systems, file destinations, sharing tools, and other third-party services are governed by their own terms and privacy practices. Zen Writer is not responsible for third-party services or for what happens to a file after you choose to send it to one.

9. Updates and availability

We may update, add, remove, suspend, or discontinue features to improve the app, address security or legal requirements, or respond to platform changes. We do not guarantee that every feature or file format will remain available on every device or operating-system version.

10. No professional advice

Zen Writer is a writing and formatting tool. It does not provide legal, financial, production, copyright, or other professional advice, and it does not guarantee that a screenplay will meet the requirements of any studio, guild, contest, school, or production.

11. Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Zen Writer is provided "as is" and "as available." We do not promise uninterrupted or error-free operation, perfect formatting, or recovery of lost or corrupted files. Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

12. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Zen Writer and its operator will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost work, profits, data, opportunities, or goodwill arising from use of the app. Any liability that cannot be excluded will be limited only to the extent permitted by applicable law.

13. Suspension and termination

You may stop using the app at any time. Your license to use Zen Writer ends if you materially violate these Terms. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination—including ownership, disclaimers, and liability limits—will continue to apply.

14. Applicable law and consumer rights

Applicable law governs these Terms. Before starting a formal dispute, please contact us so we can try to resolve the issue. Nothing in these Terms limits mandatory rights or remedies available to you under the consumer laws of your country or region.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as Zen Writer, store requirements, or applicable law changes. The effective date above identifies the latest version. Continuing to use the app after updated Terms take effect means you accept the revised Terms where permitted by law.
